Although electric car advocates often tout the eco-friendliness of their cars, they rarely describe them as attractive. However, a new EV may change that perception.
The recently revealed Automobili Pininfarina B95 is bound to leave even the most die-hard internal combustion engine enthusiasts feeling a little hot under the collar with its breathtaking roofless design. Dubbed as the first-ever pure-electric, open-top hyper Barchetta in the world, this near-silent performance car was showcased at the Monterey Car Week and boasts an impressive acceleration time of under two seconds from 0-to-60mph, along with a top speed exceeding 186mph. However, it’s worth noting that the production of this vehicle will be limited, and it won’t come cheap, considering that the German automaker confirmed that its price tag will surpass that of a Bugatti Chiron.
Introducing the newest addition to the electric car market, the Automobili Pininfarina B95 – a sleek and stylish hypercar that can reach speeds of 60mph in under 2 seconds. With its roofless design and near-silent engine, this electric beauty is turning heads all over. Only 10 models will be produced, each starting at a price tag of €4.4 million, which is approximately £3.75 million. The Munich-based EV manufacturer, which merged with Italian design house Pininfarina SpA in 2021, describes the B95 as a “dramatic interpretation of a classic racer, underpinned by pure-electric performance.” The hand-built hypercars are expected to be delivered in 2025, coinciding with the 95th anniversary of Pininfarina SpA, and the name “B” pays homage to the Italian term for a small open-topped car, barchetta.
Only a limited quantity of 10 units will be created, with a base price of €4.4 million, equivalent to £3.75 million for UK buyers. This value is approximately half a million pounds higher than the W16 Chiron from Bugatti.
During the Monterey Car Week, a new type of high-performance electric car was revealed and is being praised as the “world’s first open-top hyper Barchetta” due to its extremely fast top speed exceeding 186mph. What sets this car apart is its near-silent performance, making it a unique addition to the market.
The electric powertrain of this exclusive vehicle features a cutting-edge 120kWh lithium-ion battery that is liquid-cooled and T-shaped, capable of generating up to 1,400kW (1,878bhp) at peak power. Each car will be unique, tailored to the preferences of its ten wealthy owners through the expertise of Pininfarina. This powerful battery, housed in a lightweight carbon fibre structure, can be charged rapidly using DC fast chargers, with the fastest capable of increasing capacity from 20% to 80% in just 25 minutes. It is worth noting that this battery generates nearly 400bhp more than Bugatti’s quad-turbocharged combustion-engine hypercar, roughly equivalent to a Mercedes A45 AMG hot hatch.
The battery is contained in a carbon fibre structure that is light in weight. It can be charged through DC fast chargers that can reach up to 270kW speeds. This means that the fastest ultra-rapid devices can, in theory, increase the capacity of the battery from 20 to 80% within only 25 minutes.
The EV’s bodywork has a sleek design that gracefully curves around the front bumpers and extends over the wheel arches for a strong, athletic look. We believe this penmanship is one of the most stunning features we’ve seen on an electric vehicle so far.
Pininfarina will put great effort in creating unique B95 models for each of its ten affluent clients. With meticulous attention to detail, no two B95s will be identical, guaranteeing complete exclusivity.
The B95 is a unique electric vehicle with no roof or windshield, but it features electronically adjustable aero screens for a partially open-top driving experience. Power is delivered by four electric motors, one for each aluminum-rimmed wheel, and five driving modes allow for customization of power delivery and handling. The car’s design is stunning, with swooping bodywork that creates a muscular appearance. Its barchetta design means there is no enclosed cabin, only a cockpit surrounded by a loop that incorporates the seats and domes behind each passenger. Pininfarina, the car’s manufacturer, has created a world-first electronically adjustable aero screen setup, which includes fly screens for both the driver and passenger. The lightweight polycarbonate screens are framed by aluminum supports that can be raised and lowered with the press of a button to provide some wind protection at speed while preserving the car’s design integrity. The interior is a blend of classic race car and futuristic design, with a central portrait digital instrument cluster, carbon-fiber dashboard, and tan sustainable luxury leather upholstery. Clients can even order bespoke helmets coordinated with their chosen B95 specification.
The unique feature of the barchetta is its open design, lacking an enclosed cabin. The cockpit is enclosed by a loop which includes the seats and domes behind each passenger.
After settling into the cozy cabin, the driver is greeted by a digital instrument cluster positioned at the center and surrounded by two screens.
The design of the cockpit, which includes the seats and dashboard made of carbon-fibre material, has been crafted in a way to create a seamless transition between the exterior and interior of the vehicle. This design choice gives the impression that the bonnet blends into the cabin, resulting in a sleek and cohesive look.
The Pininfarina B95 draws inspiration from vintage fighter planes both in its exterior and interior design. Paolo Pininfarina, the Chairman of Pininfarina SpA, describes the B95 as an elegant, bold, beautiful, and innovative design that embodies a true Pininfarina style. The B95 is a celebration of the 95th anniversary of Pininfarina, which has an exceptional history of creating rare and iconic cars that are highly sought-after collectors’ items worldwide. As Automobili Pininfarina develops its portfolio of new luxury electric cars, the B95 will undoubtedly contribute to this legacy, delivering a statement of intent. The Chief Design Officer, Dave Amantea, explains that the Barchetta silhouette is instantly recognizable, but their job was to make it more beautiful, using classic proportions and exquisite detailing. The result is something truly special that defines the brand moving forward. The B95 delivers the power of Battista and creates a new dimension of driving experience, redefining the joy of driving with exceptional electrified performance in stunning open-top form.
